Estimation of the Physical Quantities01:05

Estimation of the Physical Quantities

On many occasions, physicists, other scientists, and engineers need to make estimates of a particular quantity. These are sometimes referred to as guesstimates, order-of-magnitude approximations, back-of-the-envelope calculations, or Fermi calculations. The physicist Enrico Fermi was famous for his ability to estimate various kinds of data with surprising precision. Estimating does not mean guessing a number or a formula at random. Instead, estimation means using prior experience and sound...
Insensitive Nuclei Enhanced by Polarization Transfer (INEPT)01:15

Insensitive Nuclei Enhanced by Polarization Transfer (INEPT)

Insensitive Nuclei Enhanced by Polarization Transfer (INEPT) is an advanced Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) technique specifically designed to detect and enhance the signals of low-abundance nuclei, such as carbon-13 and nitrogen-15, in small molecules. The fundamental principle behind INEPT is the transfer of polarization from a more abundant and highly polarizable nucleus, typically hydrogen-1, to the low-abundance nucleus of interest. This process effectively boosts the NMR signal of the...

¹H NMR: Interpreting Distorted and Overlapping Signals

Spin systems where the difference in chemical shifts of the coupled nuclei is greater than ten times J are called first-order spin systems. These nuclei are weakly coupled, and their chemical shifts and coupling constant can generally be estimated from the well-separated signals in the spectrum.
As Δν decreases and the signals move closer, the doublets appear increasingly distorted. The intensities of the inner lines increase at the cost of those of the outer lines as the signals are slanted or...
IR Spectrum Peak Intensity: Dipole Moment01:20

IR Spectrum Peak Intensity: Dipole Moment

The dipole moment of a bond is the product of the partial charge on either atom and the distance between them. Dipole moments influence the efficiency of IR absorption and the peak intensity. When a bond with a dipole moment is placed in an electric field, the direction of the field determines if the bond is compressed or stretched. Electromagnetic radiation consists of an electric field component that rapidly reverses direction. It follows that polar bonds are alternately stretched and...

    Summary

Adaptive optics systems face challenges in long-distance laser projection due to atmospheric turbulence. This study improves tilt estimation for better laser beam tracking in scintillated environments.

    Area of Science:

    • Optical engineering
    • Atmospheric optics
    • Laser physics

    Background:

    • Adaptive optics (AO) systems are increasingly used for long-distance laser projection through the atmosphere.
    • Atmospheric turbulence causes wave-front scintillation and branch points, complicating tilt estimation for fast steering mirrors.
    • Previous observations show a correlation between tilt error and projected beam centroid error in horizontal laser projection.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the performance of four tilt estimation schemes in horizontal laser projection systems.
    • To address the underestimation of tilt correction in highly scintillated environments.
    • To present and quantify the performance improvement of a novel tilt correction method.

    Main Methods:

    • Comparison of four distinct tilt estimation algorithms.

  • Analysis of wave-front data from long horizontal laser paths.
  • Development and simulation of a tilt correction technique.
  • Main Results:

    • All four evaluated tilt estimation schemes underestimate the required tilt correction in highly scintillated conditions.
    • A significant correlation exists between tilt estimation error and target centroid error.
    • The proposed correction method demonstrates expected performance improvements.

    Conclusions:

    • Tilt estimation in AO systems for horizontal laser projection is significantly impacted by atmospheric scintillation.
    • A new method effectively corrects for underestimation, enhancing laser beam tracking accuracy.
    • Further research can optimize AO performance in challenging atmospheric conditions.
