Fracture of a cross-linked polyethylene liner due to impingement.

The Journal of arthroplasty·2008

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Biomaterials Engineering

Background:

  • Reconstructing major acetabular defects presents significant surgical challenges.
  • Existing methods include hemispherical cups, acetabular cages, and allografting techniques.

Observation:

  • A modified impaction grafting technique was employed for acetabular reconstruction.
  • A porous-coated modular titanium acetabular component was utilized instead of the standard all-polyethylene component.

Findings:

  • The modified technique using a modular titanium component allowed for expanded surgical options during reconstruction.
  • The patient demonstrated a successful acetabular reconstruction with excellent radiographic outcomes at the 5-year follow-up.

Implications:

  • This modified approach may offer a viable alternative for complex acetabular defect reconstruction.
