Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and compare the histological differences between vitiligo and nevus depigmentosus.
  • To assess melanocyte count and melanin presence in lesional and perilesional skin of both conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Biopsies from lesional and perilesional skin of 100 vitiligo cases and 30 nevus depigmentosus cases were analyzed.
  • Histological examination included assessment of melanocytes, melanin, and dermal inflammation.
  • Techniques such as Fontana-Masson staining, NKI/beteb staining, and electron microscopy were employed.

Main Results:

  • Vitiligo lesions showed increased basal hypopigmentation and dermal inflammation compared to perilesional skin.
  • Melanin was detected in 16% of vitiligo cases, with a significantly lower pigmented area ratio than normal skin or nevus depigmentosus.
  • Melanocytes were present in 12% of vitiligo cases, though in lower numbers than in nevus depigmentosus.
