Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Sexual Health
  • Psychosocial Medicine

Background:

  • Myocardial infarction (MI) significantly impacts patients' lives, often leading to psychosocial challenges.
  • Sexual dysfunction is a common but often unaddressed consequence following MI.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the long-term changes in sexual activity after myocardial infarction.
  • To identify barriers to discussing sexual health concerns with healthcare providers post-MI.

Main Methods:

  • A semi-structured interview was conducted with 65 married men (mean age 54.4 years) an average of 42 months post-MI.
  • Patients were questioned about their sexual activity frequency before MI and at follow-up.

Main Results:

  • 70% of patients reported a significant decrease in sexual intercourse frequency (from 6.9 to 0.8 times/month, p<0.01).
  • The majority faced difficulties discussing sexual issues with doctors due to communication barriers, cultural factors, and privacy concerns.

Conclusions:

  • Sexual activity is substantially reduced in men after myocardial infarction.
  • Improving doctor-patient communication and initiating discussions about sexual health are vital for better post-MI sexual adjustment.
