Abstract:
There is a psychological journey that is taken by each physician as they enter the medical education realm, proceeding in to practice and continuing into retirement. It is imperative that clinicians understand the stages of their psychological journey in order to better understand their perceptions and behavior. This article was prepared from a commencement speech given to graduates of the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine.

Obedience
According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). Introduction to Psychological Disorders
Abnormal behavior, often referred to as mental illness, results from changes in brain function that influence thought patterns, behaviors, and social interactions. Psychologists and psychiatrists typically assess abnormal behavior using three primary criteria: deviance, maladaptation, and personal distress, particularly when these traits persist over long periods.
