Rosuvastatin therapy significantly reduced coronary artery stenosis and improved lumen diameter in patients with coronary disease. This study demonstrates rosuvastatin
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Pharmacology
- Medical Imaging
Background:
- Previous studies show statins slow coronary stenosis progression.
- No major statin monotherapy study demonstrated halted progression or regression.
- The ASTEROID trial investigated rosuvastatin's effect on coronary atherosclerosis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess if rosuvastatin can regress coronary atherosclerosis.
- To evaluate rosuvastatin's impact on atheroma burden using intravascular ultrasound and quantitative coronary angiography.
Main Methods:
- 507 coronary disease patients received rosuvastatin 40 mg/d for 24 months.
- Quantitative coronary angiography analyzed percent diameter stenosis and minimum lumen diameter.
- Intravascular ultrasound assessed atheroma volume regression.
Main Results:
- Rosuvastatin reduced LDL cholesterol by 53.3% and increased HDL by 13.8%.
- Mean percent diameter stenosis decreased significantly (P<0.001).
- Minimum lumen diameter increased significantly (P<0.001).
Conclusions:
- Rosuvastatin treatment led to regression of coronary atherosclerosis.
- Significant decreases in percent diameter stenosis and improvements in minimum lumen diameter were observed.
- Achieved average LDL cholesterol levels below 70 mg/dL with rosuvastatin therapy.
