Background:

  • Traffic accidents are the most frequent cause, with delayed diagnosis and associated injuries contributing to high morbidity and mortality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the characteristics, management, and outcomes of patients who sustained gastric rupture due to abdominal trauma.

Main Methods:

  • A 20-year retrospective review of 2,083 patients with abdominal trauma.
  • Analysis included etiology, time to surgery, injury characteristics, contamination, treatments, associated injuries, complications, and mortality.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-five patients (1.2%) experienced gastric perforation, with a median age of 35.
  • Traffic accidents and blunt weapon injuries were primary causes. All cases involved abdominal contamination. Morbidity was 60% and mortality 4%.

Conclusions:

  • Early diagnosis and surgical treatment are vital for mitigating morbidity and mortality in gastric rupture cases.
  • Prompt management strategies are essential for improving survival rates in patients with traumatic gastric injuries.
