Background:

  • Endometriosis affects 5-10% of reproductive-age women and is linked to high estrogen levels.
  • Night shift work is associated with menstrual disruption and increased risk of estrogen-influenced diseases like breast cancer.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between night shift work and endometriosis risk.
  • To explore the potential role of T3111C hCLOCK polymorphism in this association.

Main Methods:

  • Population-based case-control study involving 235 endometriosis cases and 545 controls.
  • Participants reported on night shift work history from age 18.
  • T3111C hCLOCK genotypes were analyzed in a subset of participants.

Main Results:

  • Any night shift work showed a 50% increased risk of endometriosis (OR=1.48).
  • Working more than half of shifts at night nearly doubled the risk (OR=1.98).
  • Disrupted sleep patterns further increased disease risk; T3111C hCLOCK polymorphism was not associated with endometriosis or modifying the effect of shift work.

Conclusions:

  • Findings suggest certain aspects of night shift work may contribute to endometriosis development.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms linking shift work and endometriosis.
