Hypocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis (HUVS) is a rare condition. Cyclophosphamide pulse therapy and mycophenolate mofetil effectively treated HUVS symptoms like rash and arthritis, but not lung disease.

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Immunology
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Hypocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis (HUVS) is a rare autoimmune disorder.
  • HUVS is defined by C1q precipitins, urticarial vasculitis, arthralgias, ocular inflammation, and obstructive lung disease.

Observation:

  • A 48-year-old woman with HUVS presented with corticosteroid dependence.
  • The patient experienced significant clinical improvement with cyclophosphamide pulse therapy.

Findings:

  • Mycophenolate mofetil provided effective maintenance therapy for HUVS.
  • Complete resolution of rash, arthralgias, arthritis, and uveitis was achieved.
  • Mycophenolate mofetil did not impact the obstructive lung disease associated with HUVS.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Cyclophosphamide and mycophenolate mofetil are potential therapeutic options for managing systemic symptoms of HUVS.
  • Further research is needed to address the management of obstructive lung disease in HUVS patients.
  • This case highlights the complex, multi-systemic nature of HUVS and the need for tailored treatment strategies.
