[Techniques: advantages, complications, contraindications]

The present development of laparoscopic surgery is due to its multiple advantages. In many gynaecological operations the laparoscopic route can be used, sparing the patients all the disadvantages of laparotomy. Yet, this method requires well-trained operators and anaesthetists. Complications are seldom encountered, but those that have been recorded belong to diagnostic laparoscopy; some of them are severe and may even be lethal. The complications of laparoscopic surgery will be better determined when the full experience of several surgical teams is published. The best way to prevent complications is to respect the classical contra-indications of laparoscopy, to which must be added those of laparoscopic surgery, i.e. long operative procedure, sometimes delicate dissection, nature of the lesion treated.
