Summary

Pars plana vitrectomy temporarily impacts retinal function in rabbits, with function returning to normal over time. Higher vitreous cutting speeds may be less damaging to the retina.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Physiology
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Vitrectomy is a common surgical procedure.
  • Understanding its impact on retinal function is crucial.
  • The role of vitreous cutting speed requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effects of pars plana vitrectomy on retinal function.
  • To assess the influence of vitreous cutting speed on these effects.
  • To monitor morphological changes in the retina post-vitrectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Core vitrectomy was performed on rabbits at two cutting speeds (600 and 1200 cuts/min).
  • Full-field and multifocal electroretinography (ERG and mfERG) were used to assess retinal function.
  • Immunohistochemistry for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) evaluated Müller cell activation.

Main Results:

  • Vitrectomy caused a transient reduction in rod and cone ERG responses.
  • Retinal function returned to normal by 58 days post-surgery.
  • Higher cutting speeds (1200 cuts/min) showed less GFAP upregulation, suggesting reduced Müller cell activation.

Conclusions:

  • Pars plana vitrectomy causes temporary retinal dysfunction.
  • Vitreous cutting speed did not correlate with functional deficits.
  • High-speed vitreous cutters appear to be more protective of the retina, indicated by lower Müller cell activation.
