Summary
This case report details the first instance of Staphylococcus lugdunensis causing endometritis, a uterine infection, following premature rupture of membranes. The mother and baby experienced no adverse effects despite the severe infection.
Area of Science:
- Medical Microbiology
- Infectious Diseases
- Obstetrics & Gynecology
Background:
- Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a known pathogen causing localized and bloodstream infections.
- Endometritis, an infection of the uterine lining, has not previously been associated with S. lugdunensis.
Observation:
- A case of endometritis caused by Staphylococcus lugdunensis in a 39-year-old woman following premature rupture of membranes (PROM) and emergency cesarean section is presented.
- The infection was severe, with the baby adherent to the endometrium, yet neither mother nor neonate suffered adverse outcomes.
- The causative organism displayed atypical characteristics for staphylococci.
Findings:
- This is the first reported case of Staphylococcus lugdunensis-induced endometritis.
- The patient and neonate recovered fully with antibiotic treatment and were discharged on the fourth postoperative day.
- The unusual presentation and atypical organism characteristics highlight potential diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
Implications:
- This case expands the spectrum of infections caused by Staphylococcus lugdunensis.
- It underscores the importance of considering less common pathogens in postpartum endometritis.
- Further research into the virulence factors and clinical behavior of S. lugdunensis in obstetric settings is warranted.

Endocarditis I: Introduction
Introduction:Endocarditis is the infection of the endocardium, the inner lining of the heart and its valves. When the heart muscle is involved, the condition is termed myocarditis, while an infection of the outer lining is called pericarditis. Infective endocarditis (IE) primarily affects the endocardium, where pathogens adhere to the valves or lining, forming vegetation that can lead to severe complications. Infective endocarditis occurs when microorganisms, usually bacteria from other body...
Staphylococcal Skin Infections
Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive coccus that resides harmlessly on the skin and mucous membranes of healthy individuals. When the skin barrier is breached, it can shift from a commensal to an opportunistic pathogen. This transition is facilitated by surface adhesins, such as clumping factor B and S. aureus surface protein G (SasG), which bind to structural proteins, including loricrin and cytokeratin, in the damaged epidermis. Protein A, another key factor, binds the Fc region of...
Acute Pyelonephritis II: Diagnostic Studies and Management
Introduction:For diagnosing acute pyelonephritis, a comprehensive patient history is collected to identify symptoms such as dysuria, frequent or urgent urination, flank pain, or costovertebral angle (CVA) tenderness that may suggest a kidney infection.Physical ExaminationDuring the physical examination, CVA tenderness is assessed. This involves gentle percussion over the costovertebral angle, where tenderness often indicates a kidney infection.Diagnostic TestsUrinalysis: Used to identify white...
Endocarditis IV: Nursing Management
Infective endocarditis (IE) is a chronic infection of the heart's endocardium, primarily affecting the heart valves. A detailed nursing assessment for a patient with IE involves collecting subjective and objective data to ensure an accurate diagnosis and timely intervention.Subjective DataThe nurse gathers information about the patient's symptoms and complaints during the subjective assessment. Patients with infective endocarditis often report non-specific symptoms that can mimic other...
