[Rehabilitation in former East Germany]

The fundamentals of rehabilitation in the former GDR are described with particular reference to legal aspects. Interlinking of rehabilitation measures (medical, educational, occupational, social) was achieved by organisational structures on regional level (local rehabilitation centres, local rehabilitation committees) and by involving all levels of society, including employers (all the big companies worked on a nationalized basis). Difficulties are pointed out that resulted from political and ideological prejudices (children and adolescents not amenable to school education) and from inadequate financial and material resources.
