Summary

Estrogen synthesis enzyme aromatase is widely found in neurons of the female rhesus monkey hippocampus and neocortex. This localization is independent of circulating estradiol levels, suggesting local estrogen production influences brain plasticity.

Conclusions:

  • Widespread neuronal aromatase suggests local estrogen synthesis contributes to synaptic plasticity in the monkey brain.
