Volatilization01:10

Volatilization

Volatilization gravimetry is an analytical technique that measures the mass lost due to the volatilization of the substance. This technique is used to estimate the amount of volatile material in a sample. To perform this method, heat a known amount of the sample to a high temperature in a crucible or other suitable vessel. The volatile substance in the sample evaporates, and the vapor is completely expelled from the crucible either by heating the sample or bubbling a stream of inert gas through...

Area of Science:

  • Phytochemistry
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Pharmacognosy

Background:

  • Nardostachys chinensis and Nardostachys grandiflora are important crude drugs.
  • Understanding their volatile chemical profiles is crucial for quality control and authentication.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and compare the volatile components of Nardostachys chinensis and Nardostachys grandiflora.
  • To establish chemical markers for distinguishing between the two species.

Main Methods:

  • Solid Phase Micro Extraction (SPME) coupled with Gas Chromatography (GC) and GC-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS).
  • Analysis of volatile constituents from 13 crude drug samples.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-three volatile compounds were identified, representing a significant portion of the total volatile content.
  • N. chinensis major constituents: beta-Maaliene, 9-aristolene, calarene, patchouli alcohol.
  • N. grandiflora major constituents: aromadendrene, cube-11-ene, epi-alpha-selinene, spirojatamol, valeranone.
  • Beta-maaliene and 9-aristolene peaks in GC profiles effectively distinguished the two species.

Conclusions:

  • Distinct volatile profiles exist between Nardostachys chinensis and Nardostachys grandiflora.
  • Specific compounds, beta-maaliene and 9-aristolene, serve as reliable markers for species identification.
