Elastin is Responsible for Tissue Elasticity01:12

Elastin is Responsible for Tissue Elasticity

Elastic fiber contains the protein elastin along with lesser amounts of other proteins and glycoproteins. The main property of elastin is that it will return to its original shape after being stretched or compressed. Elastic fibers are prominent in elastic tissues found in skin and the elastic ligaments of the vertebral column.
Ligaments and tendons are made of dense regular connective tissue, but in ligaments not all fibers are parallel. Dense regular elastic tissue contains elastin fibers and...
Thoracic Aorta01:15

Thoracic Aorta

The thoracic section of the aorta begins at the T5 vertebra and extends to the T12 level at the diaphragm, initially progressing through the mediastinum to the left of the spinal column. Throughout its course in the thoracic segment, the thoracic aorta emits various offshoots known collectively as visceral and parietal branches. The branches that predominantly supply blood to visceral organs are termed visceral branches and include bronchial, pericardial, esophageal, and mediastinal arteries,...
Muscles of the Thorax01:25

Muscles of the Thorax

The thorax muscles are central to the body's respiration and provide essential support and movement for the upper body. They are intricately designed to facilitate the complex breathing process while also contributing to the structural integrity and mobility of the chest and upper limbs.
The diaphragm is at the core of thoracic musculature, the primary muscle involved in breathing. This expansive, dome-shaped muscle marks the division between the thoracic and abdominal cavities. It originates...
The Thoracic Cage: Sternum01:17

The Thoracic Cage: Sternum

The thoracic or rib cage forms the body's thorax (chest) portion. Its primary function in the body is to protect vital organs in the thoracic cavity, such as the heart and the lungs. It consists of 12 pairs of ribs with their costal cartilages and the sternum. The ribs are anchored posteriorly to the 12 thoracic vertebrae (T1-T12).
The sternum is the elongated bony structure on the anterior side of the thoracic cage. It consists of three parts: the manubrium, the body, and the xiphoid process.
The Thoracic Cage: Ribs01:20

The Thoracic Cage: Ribs

Ribs are curved, flattened bones forming the thoracic cavity wall with the thoracic muscles. There are 12 pairs of thoracic ribs. The posterior ends of all the ribs articulate with the T1–T12 thoracic vertebrae. In contrast, the anterior ends of most ribs attach to the sternum via their costal cartilages.
Parts of a Typical Rib
A typical rib has a head, neck, and body. The posterior end of the rib is called the head, followed by a narrow neck. The head articulates primarily with the costal facet...
Members Made of Elastoplastic Material01:19

Members Made of Elastoplastic Material

The behavior of elastoplastic materials under bending stresses, particularly in structural members with rectangular cross-sections, is crucial for predicting material responses and understanding failure modes. Initially, when a bending moment is applied, the stress distribution across the section follows Hooke's Law and is linear and elastic. This distribution means the stress increases from the neutral axis to the maximum at the outer fibers, up to the elastic limit.
As the bending moment...

Summary

Elastofibroma of the thoracic wall is a rare soft tissue tumor. Diagnosis is possible with imaging and biopsy, and asymptomatic cases may be managed non-surgically.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Soft tissue tumors of the chest wall are uncommon.
  • Elastofibroma is an infrequent primary tumor of the chest.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report on the clinical presentation and management of elastofibroma of the thoracic wall.
  • To discuss diagnostic modalities and treatment strategies for this rare tumor.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of eight cases of thoracic wall elastofibroma treated between 1998 and 2007.
  • Surgical excision and histopathological confirmation of all tumors.
  • Analysis of patient demographics, tumor characteristics, and treatment outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Eight cases of elastofibroma of the thoracic wall were treated.
  • The majority of patients were middle-aged women presenting with dorsal subscapular tumors.
  • Surgical excision was successful with no postoperative complications or relapses.

Conclusions:

  • Elastofibroma predominantly affects middle-aged women and can be diagnosed using imaging and fine needle aspiration biopsy.
  • Asymptomatic elastofibromas, due to their benign nature and slow growth, can be monitored non-surgically.
