Abstract:
Since diabetes and hypertension frequently coexist in the same patient, it is important to consider that many antihypertensive agents may have diverse effects on carbohydrate metabolism, lipid profiles, and overall glycemic control, thus further confounding the management of patients with both diseases. The two cases below illustrate the potential metabolic effects of four commonly used antihypertensive medications (thiazide diuretics, beta-blockers, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, and calcium channel blockers) and emphasize the complex interaction between these two common diseases and their treatments.
