Individuals with impaired phonological short-term memory can still process Hebrew derivational morphology. This suggests morphological decomposition is independent of phonological short-term memory storage.

  • Learned semantically and morphologically related pairs, but not phonologically related pairs.

Findings:

  • S.E. demonstrated successful learning of nonwords facilitated by Hebrew consonant roots.
  • Semantic and morphological similarity enhanced immediate word recall.
  • Capable of morphological decomposition of Hebrew-derived words despite phonological deficit.

Implications:

  • Transient maintenance of morphological constituents is independent of temporary storage and rehearsal of phonological codes.
  • Suggests separate processing pathways within short-term memory for morphological and phonological information.
  • Provides insights into the cognitive architecture of language processing.
