Study of primary convergence insufficiency.

Summary

Primary convergence insufficiency affects 7.7% of orthoptic patients, particularly those doing near work. Both synoptophore and home exercises show equal effectiveness, but recurrence is common after stopping treatment.

Background:

Primary convergence insufficiency is a condition affecting binocular vision.
It is frequently observed in individuals engaged in prolonged near work.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the incidence of primary convergence insufficiency.
To compare the efficacy of synoptophore treatment versus home exercises for managing this condition.

Main Methods:

A detailed study of convergence was conducted on 2162 individuals aged 15-35 years.
The study analyzed orthoptic clinic attendance data.

Main Results:

The incidence of primary convergence insufficiency was found to be high, at 7.7% of all orthoptic clinic attendances.
Synoptophore exercises and home exercises demonstrated comparable efficacy in managing the condition.
A significant rate of recurrence was observed after cessation of exercises.

Conclusions:

Primary convergence insufficiency is prevalent, especially among individuals with high visual demands.
Both synoptophore and home-based exercise regimens are equally effective treatment options.
Long-term management strategies are needed due to the potential for recurrence.
