Intramembranous ossification is one of the two processes involved in the development of bones within an embryo. Summary

A mandibular mass in a dog, initially diagnosed as osteosarcoma, was reclassified as an ossifying fibroma. Complete surgical excision led to a positive outcome, highlighting the importance of considering ossifying fibroma in canine jaw tumors.

Background:

  • Canine mandibular masses require accurate diagnosis for effective treatment.
  • Osteosarcoma is a common primary bone tumor in dogs, but other fibro-osseous lesions can occur.

Observation:

  • An aged mongrel dog presented with a mandibular mass initially diagnosed as osteosarcoma.
  • Histologic examination and anatomic location led to reclassification of the mass as an ossifying fibroma.
  • The tumor involved the first molar, replacing alveolar and cortical bone.

Findings:

  • The ossifying fibroma consisted of isomorphic fusiform cells with minimal mitotic activity.
  • Tumoral stroma featured woven bone trabeculae lined by osteoblasts.
  • Imaging (CT, radiography) confirmed complete excision with no metastasis.

Implications:

  • Ossifying fibroma, though less common than osteosarcoma, is a crucial differential diagnosis for canine jaw fibro-osseous lesions.
  • Complete en bloc excision is recommended for surgical cure of canine ossifying fibroma.
  • Accurate diagnosis and surgical management contribute to favorable prognosis in canine oral tumors.
