Summary

Short interpregnancy intervals (<1 year) in Chile were linked to lower birth weights and higher cesarean section rates. Contraceptive use was higher in mothers with very short or very long interpregnancy intervals.

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Perinatal Epidemiology
  • Public Health

Context:

  • Study conducted in 8 state-supported urban maternity wards in Chile.
  • Included 2,434 deliveries of live, singleton newborns, excluding firstborns and stillbirths.
  • Data represents 1.5% of national deliveries.

Purpose:

  • To analyze the relationship between interpregnancy interval and perinatal outcomes.
  • To investigate maternal age and contraceptive use patterns in relation to interpregnancy intervals.
  • To assess cesarean section rates and newborn birth weight based on interpregnancy interval.

Summary:

  • A significant association was found between shorter interpregnancy intervals (<1 year) and lower mean newborn birth weight (3,251g) and higher incidence of low birth weight.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Cesarean section rates increased with longer interpregnancy intervals, from 21% to 28.6%.
  • Contraceptive use was notably higher in mothers with interpregnancy intervals under 1 year (26%) and over 5 years (21%).
  • Impact:

    • Findings highlight potential risks associated with short interpregnancy intervals, informing public health strategies.
    • Results suggest a need for targeted interventions and family planning support for women with extreme interpregnancy intervals.
    • The study provides valuable data on perinatal outcomes in a Chilean urban population, contributing to global maternal and child health research.
