Summary

Many smokers do not use effective smoking cessation aids (SCA) because they feel they can quit independently or believe aids are unhelpful. Future interventions should address these barriers to increase SCA uptake.

  • Insufficient understanding of the barriers preventing adequate use of available SCA.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Investigate primary reasons for non-use of SCA.
  • Examine demographic, smoking behavior, and motivational factors associated with SCA non-use.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional survey in two population-based studies in North-Eastern Germany.
  • Questionnaire administered to 636 current smokers who had not used SCA but attempted quitting/reducing smoking in the past 12 months.
  • Assessed reasons for non-use via 'Social and environmental barriers' and 'SCA unnecessary' subscales.

Main Results:

  • Overconfidence in quitting ability (55.2%) and perceived lack of necessity for help (40.1%) were key reasons for non-use.
  • Belief that smoking is not a major issue (36.5%), SCA ineffectiveness (25%), and cost (25%) were also significant barriers.
  • Smokers intending to quit and those with lower education showed stronger agreement with specific non-use barriers.

Conclusions:

  • Overestimation of self-efficacy and perception of SCA ineffectiveness are primary drivers of non-use.
  • Future smoking cessation interventions must target these specific psychological and perceived-utility barriers to enhance SCA adoption.
