Summary

Most bacterial strains from respiratory infections exhibit beta-lactamase activity, an enzyme conferring antibiotic resistance. This activity was more prevalent in patients previously treated with antibiotics.

Background:

  • Beta-lactamase enzymes are a significant mechanism of bacterial resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics.
  • Respiratory tract infections are frequently caused by bacteria, and antibiotic resistance is a growing concern.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of beta-lactamase activity in bacterial isolates from sputum of patients with respiratory infections.
  • To investigate the correlation between antibiotic use and beta-lactamase production in these isolates.

Main Methods:

  • Sputum samples from 39 patients with respiratory infections were analyzed.
  • Bacterial isolates were cultured, and their beta-lactamase activity was assessed using the nitrocefin method.

  • Forty-six microbial strains (16 species) were recovered; 37 strains showed beta-lactamase activity.
  • Beta-lactamase-positive strains were found in 35 of 39 sputum samples.

Conclusions:

  • Beta-lactamase production is common among bacteria isolated from respiratory infections.
  • Prior antibiotic exposure is associated with an increased prevalence of beta-lactamase-producing bacteria.
  • The presence of non-causative beta-lactamase-positive organisms may potentially influence the pathogenicity of causative beta-lactamase-negative organisms.
