Summary

Acoustic neuroma (AN) can occur in patients with normal hearing, often presenting with tinnitus or vertigo. Early screening with transorbital X-ray and auditory brainstem response (ABR) tests is recommended to detect AN in these individuals.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Otolaryngology
  • Neurosurgery

Background:

  • Acoustic neuroma (AN), a benign tumor of the vestibulocochlear nerve, typically presents with hearing loss.
  • However, AN can manifest in individuals with normal audiometric findings, posing diagnostic challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical features of acoustic neuroma (AN) in patients presenting with normal hearing.
  • To identify key symptoms and demographic factors associated with AN in this specific patient group.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 10 surgically confirmed acoustic neuroma (AN) cases with normal hearing.
  • Review of clinical presentations, tumor characteristics, and diagnostic findings.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • AN in normal-hearing patients predominantly affected younger adults.
  • Tumors were typically small with a short duration of symptoms.
  • Common symptoms included subjective hearing loss with tinnitus and vertigo/dizziness without cochlear complaints.

Conclusions:

  • Acoustic neuroma should be considered in patients with normal hearing who exhibit specific symptoms like tinnitus or unexplained vertigo.
  • Transorbital X-ray and auditory brainstem response (ABR) tests are valuable screening tools for detecting AN in normal-hearing individuals.
