Background:

  • Maternal stress during birth can elevate fetal arginine vasopressin (AVP) and aldosterone levels.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify predictors of delayed first voiding in newborns.
  • To find indirect evidence of AVP's role in delayed neonatal voiding.

Main Methods:

  • Compared 20 newborns with delayed voiding (>24h) to 19 controls (<24h).
  • Analyzed first urine for osmolality (U-Osm) and sodium content (U-Na).
  • Assessed maternal and birth factors, including parity, labor duration, and cardiotocography (CTG).

Main Results:

  • Higher U-Osm and lower U-Na in neonates with delayed voiding.
  • Delayed voiding associated with primiparous mothers, longer labor (both stages), and abnormal CTGs.
  • All abnormal CTGs occurred in the delayed voiding group.

Conclusions:

  • Delayed neonatal voiding is associated with prolonged and stressful birth experiences.
  • Elevated urine osmolality and sodium levels suggest increased AVP and aldosterone secretion in these infants.
