Conservative treatment of coronary heart disease is the therapeutic mainstay and includes various measures aimed at achieving a general reduction of risks. Giving up smoking is associated with a reduction of cardiovascular events of up to 50%. Physical endurance training as part of a rehabilitation program reduces cardiac mortality in CHD patients by approximately 30%, and, according to the most recent data, in selected patients represents an alternative to interventional measures. An appropriate diet can further reduce the risk of a cardiovascular event occurring. Acetylsalicylic acid, statins, ACE-blockers and beta-blockers are today standard medical treatment. Regrettably, however, considerable deficits in the implementation of the above measures for secondary prevention still persist.
