Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Geriatrics
  • Colorectal Surgery

Background:

  • Lower digestive tract diseases are common, particularly in aging populations.
  • Rectoscopic examination is a key diagnostic tool for these conditions.
  • Understanding disease prevalence in different age groups is crucial for targeted healthcare.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To estimate the frequency and types of lower digestive tract diseases in patients over 65 years old.
  • To compare disease prevalence in elderly patients with a younger cohort.
  • To analyze findings from rectoscopic examinations in these groups.

Main Methods:

  • Rectoscopy and per-rectal examinations were performed on 193 patients aged 65 and older (mean age 70.4).
  • A comparative group of 239 patients under 65 (mean age 39.6) was also examined.
  • Data on symptoms and diagnosed conditions were collected and analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Hemorrhoids were the most frequent condition in the elderly group (46.4%), followed by proctitis/sigmoiditis (14%).
  • Rectal and sigmoid polyps occurred in 10.4% of the elderly group versus 6.6% in the younger group.
  • Colorectal cancers were detected in 5.6% of the elderly patients and 2% of the younger patients.

Conclusions:

  • Hemorrhoids and proctitis/sigmoiditis are highly prevalent in older adults presenting with lower digestive tract symptoms.
  • The incidence of polyps and cancers in the rectum and sigmoid colon is higher in the elderly population.
  • Rectoscopic examination is vital for diagnosing significant lower digestive tract pathologies in geriatric patients.
