Summary

The shortest umbilical cord length permitting vaginal delivery is not definitively established, but short cords (<13 cm) are rare and typically associated with lateral placental implantation. Fundal implantation rarely presents with excessively short cords.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the shortest umbilical cord length compatible with spontaneous vaginal delivery.
  • To investigate the influence of placental implantation site on cord length and delivery.

  • Prospective, observational study of 166 women delivering spontaneously at or beyond 37 weeks.
