Summary

Split second- and third-toe transplantation offers a viable alternative for hand reconstruction when multiple toes are needed. This one-stage procedure successfully restored hand function in patients with finger amputations.

  • Existing methods may not always be optimal for complex hand reconstruction requiring multiple digits.

Observation:

  • A novel technique of split second- and third-toe transplantation was developed for one-stage hand reconstruction.
  • Three male patients (average age 22) with finger amputations distal to the web space underwent this procedure.
  • A total of four split toe transplantations were performed, with no instances of graft failure.

Findings:

  • All patients achieved successful restoration of hand function for daily living and occupational activities.
