Summary

High carbohydrate diets enhance muscle glycogen and endurance in runners. Substituting maltodextrin for some pasta and rice improved glycogen loading and reduced discomfort.

Area of Science:

  • Sports Nutrition
  • Exercise Physiology

Background:

  • Muscle glycogen is a key fuel source for endurance exercise.
  • Optimizing glycogen stores is crucial for athletic performance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effects of two high-carbohydrate diets on muscle glycogen deposition, endurance capacity, and gastrointestinal comfort in male runners.
  • To determine if a maltodextrin supplement can enhance glycogen loading compared to a traditional pasta and rice diet.

Main Methods:

  • 14 male runners participated in a crossover study.
  • Muscle glycogen was measured before and after 3.5-day high-carbohydrate interventions (90% CHO).
  • Diets included either pasta/rice or pasta/rice supplemented with a maltodextrin beverage; endurance was assessed via time to exhaustion at 75% VO2max.

Main Results:

  • Both high-carbohydrate diets significantly increased muscle glycogen and run time compared to a baseline 50% CHO diet.
  • The maltodextrin-supplemented diet showed a trend towards greater glycogen deposition and run time improvement than the pasta/rice-only diet, though not statistically significant.
  • Subjects reported less gastrointestinal discomfort and a higher preference for the maltodextrin-supplemented diet.

Conclusions:

  • Glycogen loading can be effectively achieved with high-carbohydrate diets.
  • Supplementing a traditional glycogen-loading diet with maltodextrin may offer comparable or superior results with improved palatability and reduced gastrointestinal distress.
  • Maltodextrin beverages represent a viable and comfortable alternative for carbohydrate loading in endurance athletes.
