Background:

  • Ramadan fasting involves daily abstention from food and drink from dawn to sunset.
  • Dietary restriction is a known risk factor for developing eating disorders.
  • Adolescents, particularly girls, are a vulnerable demographic for eating disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of Ramadan fasting on the eating behaviors of adolescents.
  • To assess if Ramadan fasting influences the risk factors for eating disorders in young people.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 79 healthy high school students (63 females, 16 males) participated.
  • Participants completed the Eating Attitude Test (EAT) and Bulimic Investigatory Test, Edinburgh (BITE).
  • Assessments were conducted within the weeks preceding and following the Ramadan fasting month.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant differences were observed in EAT scores before and after Ramadan.
  • No statistically significant differences were observed in BITE scores before and after Ramadan.
  • Ramadan fasting did not appear to alter eating behaviors in the studied adolescent population.

Conclusions:

  • Ramadan fasting restrictions do not seem to induce changes in eating behaviors among adolescents.
  • The findings suggest that Ramadan fasting, as a dietary restriction, does not increase the risk for developing eating disorders in this age group.
  • Further research may explore long-term effects or variations in different cultural contexts.
