Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the social and cultural characteristics of narghile smokers with cigarette smokers in Lebanon.
  • To investigate demographic differences between exclusive narghile and cigarette smokers.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from 37,579 individuals consulting the Hariri Foundation (a non-governmental organization) between 2003 and 2005.
  • Collected data on age, sex, duration of tobacco addiction, and education level for exclusive narghile and cigarette smokers across 22 centers in Lebanon.
  • Analyzed data from 13,776 smokers (36.6% of the total sample).

Main Results:

  • Exclusive narghile smoking prevalence was 4.06% (1529 subjects).
  • Narghile smokers were younger (mean age 36.2 years) than cigarette smokers (mean age 45.5 years).
  • Majority of narghile smokers were women (56.57%), and a significant proportion were recent consumers (less than 5 years).
  • Higher illiteracy rates were observed among narghile smokers (36.2%) compared to cigarette smokers (24.2%).

Conclusions:

  • Tobacco consumption is a significant public health concern in Lebanon.
  • Narghile smoking is a growing problem, particularly affecting young people and women.
  • The rising popularity of narghile necessitates its inclusion in Lebanon's anti-smoking policies.
