Bronchial Thermoplasty: A Novel Therapeutic Approach to Severe Asthma

Purpose of the Study:

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 220 participants with asthma and methacholine bronchial reactivity.
  • Participants were assigned to either a low sodium intake (placebo) or normal sodium intake (sodium supplements) for six weeks.
  • Primary outcome: change in bronchial reactivity to methacholine. Secondary outcomes included lung function, peak expiratory flow, symptoms, and quality of life.

Main Results:

  • Dietary sodium intake was successfully modulated, with a decrease in the low-sodium group and an increase in the normal-sodium group.
  • No significant differences were observed between the low-sodium and normal-sodium groups in bronchial reactivity or any secondary outcome measures.

  • Current asthma management strategies are not significantly enhanced by incorporating a low sodium diet.
