MicroRNA (miRNA) are short, regulatory RNA transcribed from introns (non-coding regions of a gene) or intergenic regions (stretches of DNA present between genes). Twelve microRNAs (miRNAs) show distinct expression patterns during murine central nervous system (CNS) development. Their highest activity occurs during embryonic stages, suggesting crucial roles in early CNS development.
