Summary

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) outbreaks cause fever, rash, and joint pain. A 2005 epidemic on La Reunion suggests a new CHIKV strain may explain its severe spread.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Entomology
  • Virology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne Alphavirus responsible for epidemics of fever, rash, and polyarthralgia.
  • CHIKV was first isolated in Tanzania in 1953 and has since caused numerous outbreaks in Africa and Southeast Asia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide the latest information on the current Chikungunya fever outbreak.
  • To analyze potential reasons behind the observed epidemiological patterns.

Main Methods:

  • This review synthesizes existing data on CHIKV outbreaks.
  • Analysis focuses on the 2005 La Reunion epidemic and potential viral mutations.

Main Results:

  • The 2005 Chikungunya fever epidemic on La Reunion was a significant public health crisis.

  • A hypothesis suggests a circulating mutant CHIKV strain could explain the epidemic's pattern.
  • Conclusions:

    • The review highlights the severe impact of CHIKV outbreaks.
    • Further investigation into CHIKV mutations is warranted to understand epidemic dynamics.
