    • Insufficient existing knowledge on self-care practices.
    • Relevance of self-care knowledge for government support programs.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess self-care knowledge and practices among different population groups.
    • To identify differences in preventive self-care between whites, blacks, and coloureds.
    • To inform the development of tailored self-care support programs.

    Main Methods:

    • A survey was conducted in the Free State.
    • The survey focused on self-care and preventive self-care.
    • Data was collected from white, black, and coloured participants.

    Main Results:

    • Significant differences in self-care practices were observed between the three population groups.
    • Preventive self-care varied notably across ethnic groups.
    • Existing self-care knowledge is insufficient for uniform program development.

    Conclusions:

    • A uniform self-care development program for all population groups in South Africa is not viable.
    • Tailored approaches are necessary to support self-care development effectively.
    • Further research is needed to understand and address population-specific self-care needs.
