Temperature Measurement Sites

A thermometer measures body temperature. The common sites for measuring body temperature are the oral cavity, axillary region, temporal artery, and skin surface, such as the forehead, abdomen, and axilla. True core body temperature is assessed in the rectum, tympanic membrane, pulmonary artery, esophagus, and urinary bladder.
Oral: When assessing oral temperature, the thermometer tip should be placed under the tongue in the posterior sublingual pocket. It offers accurate readings and can be...

Summary

Acupuncture ear points are detectable in healthy neonates, with the psychovegetative rim being most common. While generally not dependent on delivery mode, females showed more points, and cesarean deliveries had a significant difference in active ear points.

Area of Science:

  • Neonatal Medicine
  • Acupuncture Research
  • Auriculotherapy

Background:

  • Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine practice, involves stimulating specific points on the body.
  • Auriculotherapy, a subset of acupuncture, focuses on points located on the ear.
  • The presence and characteristics of acupuncture ear points in neonates are not well-established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence and absence of acupuncture ear points in healthy neonates.
  • To compare the distribution of ear points based on neonatal characteristics and delivery methods.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective observational study was conducted at a university teaching hospital.
  • Healthy neonates were examined on the fifth day after delivery using a neuronal pen with an optical signal detector.
  • Data were collected on the presence of ear points, correlating them with the Chinese ear map and comparing across sex, ear lobe, gestational age, and delivery mode.

Main Results:

  • Acupuncture ear points were detected in some healthy neonates, with 66% showing no points.
  • The psychovegetative rim was the most frequently identified point (26%); no psychic points were found.
  • No significant differences in point detection were observed between sexes, ear lobes, or gestational ages, but a significant difference was noted between cesarean and vaginal deliveries regarding two active ear points.

Conclusions:

  • Certain acupuncture ear points are detectable in healthy neonates, independent of ear lobe side.
  • Female neonates exhibited a significantly higher number of acupuncture points compared to males.
  • The findings suggest potential future applications of ear points for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in neonates.
