Summary

Vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF) is present in some patellar tendons with tendinopathy, not in healthy tendons. VEGF expression in tendons correlates with shorter symptom duration, suggesting a role in recent-onset tendinosis.

Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Orthopedics
  • Vascular Biology

Background:

  • Vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF) is a key regulator of vascular function and angiogenesis.
  • Patellar tendinopathy is characterized by pathological changes, including vascular hyperplasia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate VEGF expression in patellar tendons of patients with tendinopathy versus healthy controls.
  • To identify cell populations expressing VEGF in normal and tendinopathic tendons.
  • To determine if VEGF expression correlates with symptom duration.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemical assessment of VEGF expression in patellar tendon tissue samples.
  • Collection of tissue from patients with patellar tendinopathy and healthy controls.

  • Immunolabeling of inflammatory and repair cell types.
  • Main Results:

    • VEGF expression was absent in control tendons but present in a subset of tendinopathic tendons.
    • VEGF was localized to the intimal layer of tendon vessels.
    • Tendons with VEGF expression had significantly shorter symptom duration (12 months) compared to VEGF-negative tendons (32.8 months).

    Conclusions:

    • VEGF expression is associated with histopathological evidence of angiofibroblastic tendinosis.
    • VEGF may contribute to vascular hyperplasia in symptomatic tendinopathy, particularly in recent-onset cases.
    • VEGF's role in tendinopathy warrants further investigation.
