Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Microbiology
  • Poultry Science
  • Proteomics

Background:

  • Fowl cholera, caused by Pasteurella multocida, poses a significant economic threat to the turkey industry.
  • Current vaccine strategies require improvement to effectively combat P. multocida infections.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify outer-membrane proteins of P. multocida for improved vaccine development.
  • To characterize the detergent-soluble, cross-protective protein fraction of P. multocida.

Main Methods:

  • Proteomic analysis of Pasteurella multocida outer-membrane subfractions.
  • Identification of novel protein components within the detergent-soluble fraction.

Main Results:

  • Eleven outer-membrane proteins were identified in total.
  • Four additional proteins were characterized: OMA87, HemR, LctP, and RfaF.
  • OMA87 and HemR were highlighted for their potential roles in virulence and vaccine development.

Conclusions:

  • The complete composition of the detergent-soluble, cross-protective protein fraction of P. multocida was elucidated.
  • OMA87 and HemR are promising candidates for subunit and modified live vaccines, respectively.
  • Further research into these proteins can lead to enhanced fowl cholera vaccines.
