Background:

  • Traditional heat acclimation protocols (≥6 sessions, ≥60 min) improve endurance exercise capacity in heat.
  • These protocols are not sport-specific and their effect on intermittent high-intensity running is unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a novel, intermittent heat acclimation protocol on team sport activity performance.
  • To assess if shorter, sport-specific acclimation improves high-intensity intermittent running capacity.

Main Methods:

  • Seventeen female athletes completed four 30-45 min Loughborough Intermittent Shuttle Test (LIST) sessions in heat (30°C, 24% RH) over 10 days.
  • Control and moderate training groups underwent trials in temperate conditions (18°C, 41% RH) or no training.
  • Pre- and post-acclimation trials were separated by 28 days, controlling for menstrual cycle phase.

Main Results:

  • The heat acclimation group significantly increased distance run by 33% (p<0.05) compared to control and moderate training groups.
  • Acclimated athletes exhibited lower rectal temperatures (p<0.01) and improved thermal comfort.
  • No significant changes in serum progesterone, aldosterone, or cortisol levels were observed.

Conclusions:

  • Four short-duration (30-45 min) intermittent exercise sessions effectively induce heat acclimation in female athletes.
  • This protocol enhances intermittent running exercise capacity, likely due to reduced core temperature and improved thermal comfort.
  • The findings suggest a practical, sport-specific approach to heat acclimation for team sports.
