Reconstructing severely damaged thumbs using amputated fingers can restore hand function and appearance. This rare surgical technique offers a viable solution for thumb reconstruction when replantation is not possible.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Hand Surgery
  • Microsurgery

Background:

  • Thumb amputation significantly impairs hand function.
  • Replantation is not always feasible for crushed thumbs.
  • Thumb reconstruction options are limited.

Observation:

  • Six patients with irreparable thumb amputations underwent reconstruction using amputated digits.
  • Four patients received index finger remnants, while two received middle or ring fingers.
  • Follow-up ranged from 12 to 45 months (mean 18 months).

Findings:

  • All reconstructed thumbs survived post-surgery.
  • Patients achieved satisfactory cosmetic and functional outcomes.
  • The procedure demonstrated effectiveness in restoring thumb function.
