Summary

Retired racing Greyhounds experiencing excessive bleeding after surgery may have abnormal fibrinolysis. Preoperative tests for antithrombin and antiplasmin can help predict bleeding risk in these dogs.

  • Excessive postoperative bleeding occurs in some retired racing Greyhounds (RRG) after surgical procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if preoperative hemostatic abnormalities can predict the risk and severity of postoperative bleeding in RRG.
  • To investigate potential causes of excessive bleeding in this population.

  • Eighty-eight RRG undergoing ovariohysterectomy or castration were evaluated.
  • Preoperative and postoperative hemostatic assays included platelet count, OSPT, APTT, fibrinogen, d-dimer, plasminogen, antiplasmin, antithrombin, vWF concentration, vWF collagen binding assay, and Factor XIII assay.

  • Lower preoperative antiplasmin and antithrombin concentrations, and higher vWF:CBA were associated with excessive hemorrhage.
  • Postoperative bleeding was linked to lower platelet counts, hematocrit, OSPT, and higher fibrinogen and antiplasmin levels compared to preoperative values.

Conclusions:

  • Excessive postoperative bleeding in RRG is not linked to primary or secondary hemostatic defects.
  • Altered fibrinolysis is a potential cause of this bleeding.
  • Preoperative assessment of antiplasmin and antithrombin may aid in predicting bleeding risk.
