Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate thermographic changes during localized exercise in young and elderly individuals.
  • To compare heat production and dissipation capacities between age groups.

Main Methods:

  • Infrared thermography measured skin temperature of the posterior thigh in 15 young and 14 elderly subjects.
  • A 3-minute, 1kg knee flexor exercise protocol was used.
  • Temperature was recorded pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise, and for 10 minutes post-exercise.

Main Results:

  • Elderly subjects had lower pre-exercise resting temperatures (p < 0.01).
  • Both groups showed heat concentration in the exercised limb immediately post-exercise.
  • Young subjects exhibited a significant temperature reduction in the exercised limb at 10-min post-exercise (p < 0.05).
  • Both groups showed temperature reduction in the contralateral limb post-exercise (p < 0.01).

Conclusions:

  • Elderly and young subjects possess similar heat production capacities during exercise.
  • Elderly individuals exhibit lower resting temperatures and slower heat dissipation compared to younger adults.
  • Findings suggest implications for sports training and rehabilitation strategies for older populations.
