Four new abyssinones A-D were isolated from Erythrina abyssinica stem bark. Compounds 1, 3, and 4 showed moderate cytotoxic activity against human colorectal cancer cells.
Area of Science:
- Natural Products Chemistry
- Pharmacology
- Medicinal Chemistry
Background:
- Erythrina abyssinica is a plant species known for its traditional medicinal uses.
- Chalcones are a class of natural products with diverse biological activities.
- Colorectal cancer remains a significant global health challenge, necessitating novel therapeutic agents.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize new chalcone compounds from Erythrina abyssinica stem bark.
- To evaluate the cytotoxic activity of the isolated compounds against a human colorectal cancer cell line.
Main Methods:
- Phytochemical investigation of Erythrina abyssinica stem bark.
- Structure elucidation of isolated compounds using spectroscopic analyses (e.g., NMR, MS).
- Cytotoxicity assays using the Caco2 human colorectal cancer cell line to determine IC50 values.
Main Results:
- Four new chalcones, designated abyssinones A–D (compounds 1–4), were successfully isolated and their structures determined.
- Compounds 1, 3, and 4 demonstrated moderate cytotoxic effects against Caco2 cells.
- The IC50 values for compounds 1, 3, and 4 were recorded as 13.3, 15.1, and 11.1 μM, respectively.
Conclusions:
- The study successfully identified novel chalcones from Erythrina abyssinica.
- Abyssinones A, C, and D possess cytotoxic potential against colorectal cancer cells, warranting further investigation.
- These findings contribute to the understanding of Erythrina abyssinica's chemical constituents and their potential therapeutic applications in cancer treatment.
