Background:

  • The precise etiology of Tourette syndrome (TS) remains unknown.
  • Emerging evidence suggests a potential role for the immune system in TS pathogenesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate lymphocyte surface markers in adult patients with Tourette syndrome.
  • To explore potential immune system involvement in Tourette syndrome.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot study involving 20 adult patients with TS and 20 matched controls.
  • Analysis of frequently studied lymphocyte surface markers, including CD69+/CD22+-B cells and CD95+/CD4+-T cells.
  • Statistical analysis with Bonferroni-Holm correction for significance.

Main Results:

  • Significant differences were found in specific lymphocyte surface markers between TS patients and controls.
  • Elevated levels of CD69+/CD22+-B cells (23.0% vs 13.1%) and CD95+/CD4+-T cells (41.5% vs 24.6%) were observed in TS patients.
  • These differences remained statistically significant after Bonferroni-Holm correction.

Conclusions:

  • Preliminary findings suggest an association between Tourette syndrome and heightened peripheral immune activity.
