Automated Microbial Diagnostics01:24

Automated Microbial Diagnostics

Automated diagnostic analyzers have transformed clinical microbiology by providing rapid and reliable methods for pathogen identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing. Among these systems, the Vitek 2 is widely used because it automates the traditionally labor-intensive processes of microbial identification (ID) and antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST), delivering standardized and timely results that are essential for effective patient care.Microbial Identification with ID CardsThe...
Rapid Identification of Pathogens01:25

Rapid Identification of Pathogens

MALDI-TOF MS has transformed clinical microbiology by offering a rapid and reliable method for pathogen identification. The traditional approach to microbial identification typically involves time-consuming culture techniques and biochemical tests, which can delay the initiation of appropriate antimicrobial therapy. MALDI-TOF MS avoids these delays by using characteristic ribosomal protein mass patterns of microbial cells, enabling accurate species-level identification within minutes.Principle...
Genital Herpes01:23

Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection primarily caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), though herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is increasingly implicated in genital infections, particularly among younger populations. Transmission occurs mainly through sexual contact, with asymptomatic viral shedding serving as a major route of spread. This characteristic makes HSV-2 difficult to control at a population level, as individuals may unknowingly transmit the virus even in the...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Syphilis remains a significant public health concern, particularly among men who have sex with men.
  • Traditional screening methods may have limitations in reach and early detection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of an online-mediated syphilis screening program.
  • To compare online screening outcomes with those from a local sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinic.

Main Methods:

  • A website was developed offering syphilis information and referral letters for non-clinical testing.
  • Participants accessed test results online; usage was tracked during periods with and without advertising.

Main Results:

  • 898 users downloaded referral letters, with 93 men testing; 96% accessed results online.
  • Online screening identified a higher percentage of men needing syphilis treatment (50%) compared to the STI clinic (24%).
  • Online users who tested positive were often new to STI clinic services (33%).

Conclusions:

  • Online-mediated syphilis testing is a feasible and successful method for detecting infections in men who have sex with men.
  • The online approach outperformed standard procedures in identifying syphilis cases.
  • Sustained promotional efforts are necessary to increase the utilization of online syphilis screening services.
