Specialized Care Centers and Settings-II

Rural Health Centers
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Community Health
  • HIV/AIDS Prevention

Background:

  • Community-based organizations (CBOs) are vital for health promotion and reducing health disparities.
  • Many CBOs face capacity limitations hindering their effectiveness.
  • The Pfizer Foundation Southern HIV/AIDS Prevention Initiative supports CBOs in HIV/AIDS prevention efforts.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the capacity of CBOs funded by the Pfizer Foundation Southern HIV/AIDS Prevention Initiative.
  • To identify strengths and weaknesses in CBOs' HIV/AIDS prevention intervention skills.
  • To determine specific technical assistance needs for enhancing CBOs' HIV/AIDS prevention capacity.

Main Methods:

  • Surveyed 20 CBOs receiving supplemental grant funding.
  • Assessed knowledge and self-assessed abilities in goal development and intervention activities.
  • Evaluated skill levels in intervention evaluation and other specific activities.

Main Results:

  • CBOs demonstrated high knowledge in developing goals and objectives (mean score=3.08/4).
  • High self-assessed abilities were reported for community relationship building and coalition development.
  • Lower knowledge and skill levels were identified for intervention evaluation.

Conclusions:

  • Funded CBOs possess foundational abilities for HIV/AIDS prevention.
  • A significant need for technical assistance exists, particularly in intervention evaluation.
  • Targeted support can maximize the HIV/AIDS prevention capacity of CBOs.
