Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Gynecologic Oncology
  • Preventive Medicine

Background:

  • Opportunistic cervical cancer screening has been available in Austria since the late 1960s and is free of charge.
  • A nationwide population-based cross-sectional study was conducted in 2005 to assess screening status.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding cervical cancer screening among Austrian women.
  • To compare current screening data with a similar study conducted in 1995.

Main Methods:

  • A representative sample of Austrian women aged 20-69 years was surveyed.
  • Data on Pap smear screening knowledge and participation were collected and analyzed.
  • Results were compared to identical study data from 1995.

Rapid Detection of Fecal Antigen of Helicobacter pylori Infection Based on Double Antibody Sandwich Detection Technology

Published on: May 23, 2025

Main Results:

  • Awareness of Pap smear screening was high (95.7% in 2005 vs. 94.0% in 1995).
  • Screening participation increased significantly (88.0% in 2005 vs. 76.2% in 1995), with 52.6% optimally screened.
  • Lower participation was observed in rural areas; higher education correlated with a greater proportion of never-screened women. Gynecologists performed more Pap smears in 2005 compared to 1995.

Conclusions:

  • Cervical cancer screening participation in Austria has shown a significant upward trend since 1995.
  • Targeted screening campaigns are recommended to reach young and well-educated women, as well as those in rural areas.
