Abstract:
The association of microscopic colitis with celiac disease is rare. A case of microscopic colitis associated with celiac disease and following administration of venlafaxine in a 67-year-old patient is described. The pathophysiologic hypotheses of such an association are discussed.
Insights
The rare association between microscopic colitis and celiac disease was observed in a 67-year-old patient after venlafaxine administration. Pathophysiologic hypotheses for this rare gastrointestinal disorder link are discussed.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Clinical Case Reports
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Microscopic colitis and celiac disease are distinct gastrointestinal conditions.
- The co-occurrence of these two conditions is exceptionally rare in clinical practice.
- Understanding rare disease associations is crucial for comprehensive patient care.
Observation:
- A 67-year-old patient presented with symptoms potentially related to both microscopic colitis and celiac disease.
- The patient had recently been administered venlafaxine, a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor.
- This case highlights a potential, albeit uncommon, drug-induced or associated phenomenon.
Findings:
- The case describes the simultaneous presentation of microscopic colitis and celiac disease.
- Venlafaxine administration preceded the observed clinical scenario.
- The study explores potential pathophysiologic mechanisms linking these conditions and the medication.
Implications:
- This case expands the known spectrum of rare gastrointestinal associations.
- It prompts consideration of venlafaxine in the differential diagnosis for patients with unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms and potential celiac disease or microscopic colitis.
- Further research into drug-induced gastrointestinal pathologies is warranted.
