Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Plasma Physics
  • X-ray Optics

Background:

  • High energy density experiments require robust x-ray diagnostics.
  • Traditional x-ray window materials like beryllium have limitations.
  • Lithium's high x-ray transparency is advantageous for diagnostic protection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate lithium as a material for x-ray windows.
  • To investigate methods for improving the mechanical properties of lithium.
  • To compare lithium-based windows with existing beryllium options.

Main Methods:

  • Mixing pure lithium with lithium hydride powder.
  • Assessing the mechanical strength and hardness of the composite material.
  • Comparing x-ray absorption properties with standard materials.

Main Results:

  • Lithium hydride addition significantly enhances the hardness and strength of lithium.
  • The strengthening process does not introduce additional x-ray absorption.
  • Lithium-lithium hydride composites show potential as superior x-ray window materials.

Conclusions:

  • Lithium strengthened with lithium hydride is a viable candidate for x-ray windows.
  • This composite offers improved mechanical properties over pure lithium.
  • It presents a potentially excellent alternative to beryllium for soft x-ray diagnostics.
